About the Museum

The Cedar Hill Museum of History is currently "without walls" and is operating temporarily from the Hughes Chapel at 332 Cedar Street (west entrance), one block east of the old downtown. The Museum group is currently actively collecting, cataloging and sharing community history through various venues.

Temporary exhibits at the Government Center lobby on Uptown Blvd. and the City Library are changed approximately every two months. There are four vertical cases in the Government Center lobby most recently featuring quilts, one of which was buried for safe keeping during the Civil War. The case on the north side (closest to the Water Department) highlights Outstanding Citizens of the Month with Joe and Wanda Pitt being recognized the beginning of this year. The Government Center is open during the week and on the second and fourth Tuesdays monthly for City Council meetings. Please let us know if you have a private collection which relates to Cedar Hill history that you would like to loan the Museum for display at these locations.

If you would like to receive a newsletter, record an oral history or visit the offices and collection workroom please contact us. The Museum has a small collection of artifacts and over 3,000 photographs, as well as several community related historic documents in its temporary location. Offices are open part time and by appointment. Please contact Phyllis Stewart at 972 293-3806 to visit or to make a donation.

The Cedar Hill Museum of History was organized in 2006 by several members of the Cedar Hill Historical Society which was founded in 1978. The Museum is a 501(c)3 non- profit organization and is governed by an Executive Board and a fourteen member Board of Trustees made up of community leaders, with one part time administrator, Phyllis Stewart.

Mission of the Cedar Hill Museum is to collect, preserve and protect historic and prehistoric materials relating to Cedar Hill in order to use these materials to interpret its history through exhibits, publishing materials relevant to the community’s history and conducting educational programs.
